Matalom is a third class municipality in the province of Leyte,Philippines. It borders with Bato in the nort. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 32,586 people

It was said that the Spaniards once saw the flaming red of the fire trees that dotted the shores of Matalom Beach and the scenic Canigao Island and asked the natives the local dialect for “hermosa” or beautiful. The natives answered “Matahum” or “Matalom.” This was the origin of the town’s name.

Before Ferdinand Magellan discovered the Philippines, a sea-faring people lived along the banks of the Matalom River and also on the islet of Canigao (formerly Comigao).

1. CANIGAO ISLAND

Canigao Island, located in the town of Matalom, is one of Leyte's tropical paradises ideal for summer getaways. It is a small island that can be easily accessed by boat from the mainland.
Being one of the developed islands in the area, tourists can find several facilities set up on Canigao Island. There is an information center, a treehouse, a couple of cottages, and grilling areas. Apart from those, locals and tourists alike would also enjoy the island's white sand beach lined by lush palm trees and blue waters. Aside from relaxing by the beach, travelers can also explore a lighthouse here that is considered to be one of the oldest lighthouses in Leyte. You can also wade into the waters to discover the diverse marine ecosystem underneath the waves, as the area is home to corals and different fish species. Other activities in Canigao include swimming, playing beach volleyball or Frisbee, fishing, kayaking, jet-skiing, and camping.

Another tourists spot of matalom is hitoog cave.

2. HITOOG CAVE

Hitoog Cave is located at Brgy. Hitoog Matalom, Leyte. It is about 7 km ahead from the Matalom proper. You will ride a motorcycle to go there with 75 pesos fair. About the entrance fee? it is only 20 pesos. Before going there don’t forget to bring foods, extra t-shirts, and other necessary things.

In this place, you will enjoy very much. You can take selfies or videos anywhere in that place because of the very perfect and nice view . The water is so cool you don’t want to get out of the water.  The cave is so beautiful, the closest we can get to nature.  You will be amazed in this place.

3. KARAPAGAN FALLS

Karap-agan Falls was quitely refreshing and and relaxing to view. It is a two leveled falls, and on its second level there is a mini pool where you can dive and enjoy the every drops of water that is falling from above. One thing that I love about this falls is the 5m high cliff dive at its second level. Make sure that you have to be aware which part you should jump since there is a lot of big rocks so safety first.

The jump-off point is at the side of the river. You will crossed the other side of the river and started the trek. Along the trail, you will passed by several farmlands and piled rocks. After 15 minutes of trekking you can finally reached the falls.
